This page answers the questions that come at a program from every side — the front office, the classroom, the kitchen table, and the business office. Start anywhere.

The short version

Three facts that answer most of the worry.

No live ammunition. No projectiles. Period.

Training firearms cannot chamber, load, or fire a live cartridge. Laser cartridges emit only light. There is nothing on this platform that can eject a projectile of any kind. All training firearms are marked with red barrels and magazine plates to ensure no confusion.

Eye-safe laser pulses only.

All training firearms use class 1 lasers, the same class used in commercial barcode scanners and classroom laser pointers. Tested and certified for classroom environments.

Fully instructor-controlled.

Students cannot launch scenarios, modify difficulty, or access administrative tools without instructor credentials. All equipment is packed and delivered in hard, locking cases with locks.

How the system works

A projector, a camera, and a device that emits light.

If you have never been near law enforcement training, that sentence is genuinely the whole mechanism. Here is the same thing drawn out, and then said four more times in plain English.

    A scenario goes up on the wall.

    A projector throws a full-scale video scenario onto a projection screen at one end of a classroom you already have. No range construction, no ventilation work, no lead, no hearing protection.

  2. 02

    The student trains with a device that cannot fire.

    Either a purpose-built training firearm with realistic weight and slide manipulation, or a duty-type firearm rendered inert with a SureStrike laser cartridge seated where a round would go. Pulling the trigger emits a brief pulse of light. Nothing else ever leaves the device.

  3. 03

    A camera reads where the light landed.

    That is the entire sensing mechanism: light in, coordinates out. The system records where each pulse struck the projected scene and exactly when — to the frame. There is no projectile to track because there is no projectile.

  4. 04

    The instructor drives it, then debriefs it.

    Scenarios branch on what the student says and does, under instructor control the whole way through. Afterward the class replays the run with the shot data and the decision path on screen. That replay is where most of the actual learning happens.

What the room needs
Projection screen
A 120-inch projection screen is the recommended size. We confirm the fit for your room on the quote.
Projector
1080p, rated at 2,200 lumens or brighter, so the scene stays readable without blacking the room out.
Power and light
Standard wall power, and room lighting you can bring down. No electrical work.
The room itself
A classroom you already have. No range construction, ventilation retrofit, lead remediation, sound treatment, or hearing protection.
What will not work
  • Reflective or gloss whiteboards — the surface scatters the beam instead of holding it.
  • Televisions, touch screens, and interactive panels — all far too glossy for the infrared laser to register a clean hit.

The laser is infrared, and a glossy surface scatters it rather than holding it where the camera can read a clean hit. Worth checking before anyone budgets for a display.

What the training is for

Far more judgment than marksmanship.

The most common misconception about this equipment is that it exists to teach students to shoot. It exists to teach them to think, speak, and account for their decisions — the parts of the job that occupy nearly all of a real career.

The graded moment is not the shot. It is the student explaining, in front of the class, what they saw and why they did what they did.

Verbal command and de-escalation

Most of a public safety career is talking. Students practice giving clear direction, managing a scene with their voice, and recognizing when slowing down is the correct tactical choice.

Decision-making under time pressure

A branching scenario will not wait for a student to feel ready. They learn to gather information, choose, and live with the consequence — then examine that choice in the debrief.

Threat recognition and assessment

Reading a room, a vehicle, a doorway, a set of hands. Students learn what to look at first and what a change in behavior actually indicates, against scenes that do not telegraph the answer.

Articulation — explaining what you did and why

The skill that separates a defensible report from an indefensible one. Every run ends with the student walking the class through what they perceived, what they decided, and what justified it.

Marksmanship fundamentals

Grip, stance, sight alignment, trigger control, follow-through. The mechanics that are best learned through volume and immediate feedback — both of which are hard to get on a live range and easy to get here.

Repetition without consumables

No ammunition to buy, no range to book, no bus to charter, no cleanup. A rotation that a live range makes a once-a-semester field trip becomes something a program can run every week.

  • Is there any way a live round ends up in this classroom?

    No. The training firearms are either purpose-built training devices or permanently modified so that a live cartridge cannot be chambered or discharged — the mechanisms that would make it possible are absent or disabled. They are marked with red barrels and magazine plates, and they arrive in hard, locking cases. No live ammunition is part of this program at any point.

  • How do I describe this to the community?

    It is a projector, a screen, and a device that emits light — much closer to a driving simulator than to a shooting range. Students practice decisions, communication, and de-escalation against branching video scenarios. We provide plain-language communication templates you can drop straight into a newsletter, a board packet, or a program-of-study document.

  • What does this do to our liability posture?

    Most districts treat it as instructional technology — the same category as a welding simulator, a nursing manikin, or a science-lab apparatus. We will send your risk-management office our certificate of insurance and vendor documentation so they can make that determination with real paperwork in front of them instead of assumptions.

  • What does it need from my building?

    A classroom you already have, plus a real projection setup: a 120-inch projection screen and a 1080p projector rated at 2,200 lumens or brighter, on standard wall power, in a room where you can bring the lights down. Glossy surfaces are the one hard limit — reflective whiteboards, televisions, and interactive touch panels all scatter the infrared laser and cannot be used. Beyond that: no range construction, no ventilation retrofit, no lead remediation, no sound treatment, no hearing protection.

The question is not whether it works. It is what you teach on Monday.

  • What am I actually teaching with it?

    Decision-making under time pressure, verbal command and de-escalation, threat recognition, articulation of a use-of-force decision, and marksmanship fundamentals. The debrief — where a student explains what they saw and why they acted on it — carries more of the instructional weight than the scenario itself.

  • How much of my period does setup eat?

    Once the projector is mounted and the system is calibrated, starting a class day means powering on and choosing a scenario. Calibration is a short routine, not a rebuild. We run the first setup with you — on site where the travel from north Georgia is feasible, by video call otherwise — and stay reachable by phone or video afterward, so a bad calibration morning does not cost you a period. Programs typically run a full student rotation inside a standard block period.

  • Do I need to be a certified firearms instructor?

    Not to operate the equipment. We run instructor onboarding covering setup, calibration, scenario selection, console controls, and debrief technique. What credentials your program requires to teach the subject is set by your state and your institution — that is their call, not ours, and we are glad to talk to whoever makes it.

  • Can I see what a student actually did?

    Yes. Shot placement, timing, hits and misses, and the path a student took through a branching scenario are all captured, so a debrief is a replay rather than a memory contest. That same record is what makes rubric-based assessment possible instead of impressionistic grading.

  • Is my child handling a real gun?

    No. These devices cannot fire. They are either built from the ground up as training equipment or permanently modified so that live ammunition cannot be chambered or discharged, and they are marked with red barrels and magazine plates so there is never any question about what they are. No live ammunition is brought into the classroom.

  • Is the laser dangerous to their eyes?

    The cartridges emit brief, low-power pulses in the same class as a retail barcode scanner or a classroom laser pointer. No heat, no projectile, nothing that can ricochet. The equipment is tested and certified for classroom environments.

  • Why is this being taught at all?

    For the same reason a nursing pathway has manikins and an automotive pathway has vehicle lifts: it is a career pathway with real jobs at the end of it. Students in these programs go on to law enforcement, corrections, dispatch, emergency medical services, fire service, campus and private security, and criminal justice degrees. The coursework spends far more time on judgment, communication, and de-escalation than it does on marksmanship.

  • Who is supervising, and can we opt out?

    A credentialed instructor runs every session, and students cannot start a scenario or change settings without instructor credentials. Enrollment, permission, and opt-out policy belong to your school rather than to us — so that conversation goes to your student’s instructor or principal, and we make sure they have the materials to answer it fully.

  • How do we get a quote?

    Tell us the program, the room, and roughly how many students move through a rotation. We turn a hard, itemized quote around in one to three business days — line items, quantities, and shipping, which is included in every quote we write — formatted so your office can attach it straight to a requisition. The quote is good for 30 days. Pricing is quoted to your program; it is never published on this site.

  • Do you accept purchase orders?

    Yes — and the PO is the trigger, not the payment. Your district or institution issues a PO against the quote; we confirm receipt in writing and stage the order to ship rather than waiting on funds to clear. Terms are net 30 from invoice. Because the invoice carries your PO number and mirrors the quote line for line, the three-way match against your receiving documentation is straightforward.

  • What do you need to be set up as a vendor?

    Send us the packet or the portal link and we will complete it — W-9, certificate of insurance, vendor profile, remittance and ACH details, and supplier-portal enrollment. If your institution requires a specific form, a specific insurance endorsement, or registration in a system we have not used before, tell us and we will work through it.

  • What are we on the hook for after delivery?

    Less than most equipment lines carry. Every laser we sell is warrantied for life, and the training pistols and rifles carry three-year warranties. Setup and troubleshooting are handled by phone or video and stay available after the install rather than ending at the loading dock.

  • Our funding has strings attached.

    That is normal in this category. Purchases here are commonly made with Perkins V, CTE, general fund, foundation, or grant dollars. We provide sole-source and purchase-justification letters, and equipment descriptions written to drop into a grant narrative. We cannot tell you what your particular funding source permits — but we can give your grant coordinator the documentation and the language to make the case.

Nobody should have to already speak this language to evaluate a program that uses it. If a term shows up in a quote, a syllabus, or a board packet and you would rather not ask twice, it is probably here.

CTE
Career and Technical Education — the family of secondary and post-secondary programs that prepare students for a specific career field. Public safety is one pathway among many, alongside nursing, welding, and automotive.
POST
Peace Officer Standards and Training — the state body that sets certification requirements for law enforcement officers. Programs that prepare students to enter an academy are often described as POST-prep.
Perkins V
The federal law that funds career and technical education. It is a common funding source for equipment in a CTE pathway, and it comes with its own documentation requirements.
Use of force
The professional and legal framework governing what level of intervention an officer may use in a given situation, and how that decision has to be justified afterward. Teaching it is mostly teaching judgment.
De-escalation
Deliberately reducing the intensity of an encounter — with distance, time, positioning, and above all with words — so that a situation resolves without force. It is a trained skill, not a personality trait.
Branching scenario
A video scene that changes course based on what the student says and does. The same scenario can end several different ways, which is what makes it a decision exercise rather than a shooting exercise.
Debrief
The structured review after a scenario, where the student explains what they perceived, what they decided, and why. This is the graded, instructionally significant part of the exercise.
Dry fire
Practicing the mechanics of operating a firearm with no ammunition present. It is a standard, long-established training method; the laser cartridge simply adds a record of where the shot would have gone.
Laser cartridge
A device shaped like a round of ammunition that sits where a round would sit. It contains no propellant and no projectile — pulling the trigger emits a brief pulse of light that the system reads.
Recoil-enabled training firearm
A non-firing training device that cycles its slide and produces a recoil impulse, so that grip and follow-through feel realistic. It cannot chamber or discharge live ammunition.
Lumens
A measure of how much light a projector puts out. It matters here because the scenario has to stay readable with the room lit enough for an instructor to watch the class — 2,200 lumens is the floor we recommend.
Net 30
Payment terms: the invoice comes due 30 days after it is issued. It is the standard arrangement for institutional purchasing, and it is what we work on.
Purchase order (PO)
The document an institution issues to commit to a purchase. It authorizes the vendor to ship and gives the business office a reference number that ties the quote, the receiving record, and the invoice together.
Sole source
A justification that a specific product is the only one meeting a program’s requirements, used when a purchase would otherwise need competitive bids. We write the letter; your office decides whether it applies.
